Brazilian jiu jitsu has been becoming one of the most popular forms in recent years. Its history goes back over 100 years although traces of it can be found as far back as the 3rd Century.
People have been falling in love with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu’s combination of mental discipline and physical prowess. But what is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, though?
Here’s what you need to know if you’re thinking of checking out Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
What You Need to Know About Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
The first thing to keep in mind with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is it’s not the only Jiu Jitsu out there. That’s part of what makes it a little confusing to learn about.
Japanese Jiu Jitsu is a very popular martial art in its own right. And while the two bear some commonalities beyond their name, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is quite a bit different from its Japanese counterpart.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu largely takes place on the ground. It places the greatest emphasis on grappling and chokeholds. This gives it more in common with Western wrestling than most other forms of martial arts.
One of the best things Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has going for it is that anyone can do it. It teaches you to play to the strengths of your particular body type. Sure, being a beefcake can have its advantages in a physical altercation.
So can being small, however.
This makes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu one of the few martial arts that is available for absolutely everybody! Even kids can learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from qualified experts.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Vs. Other Martial Arts
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu focuses almost exclusively on grappling and holds. Other forms of martial arts tend to focus on striking. This means that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is better suited for self-defense than nearly any other form of martial art on Earth.
Karate tends to focus more on punching. Tae Kwon Do puts more emphasis on developing elaborate combinations of kicks. Both of these put more emphasis on aggression rather than defense.
One final thing that makes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu so popular and prevalent is its emphasis on real-world applications. Once a student learns the fundamentals, exercises focus on recreating scenarios the student is likely to run into in the real world.
There’s no substitution for experience, as they say. And there’s no substitution for the real thing, either.
Going to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools and learning more puts you in a place to take command of your life. You’ll feel more confident and in control. You’ll be more at ease no matter what scenario you find yourself in.
You’ll get in great shape and make some friends along the way, too!
