3 and out: What we learned in Bears' loss to Vikings

Posted October 10, 2017

Keenum began the game on the bench after starting the past three games in place of Sam Bradford.

Bradford was sacked four times in the first half, including once for a safety, while completing just five of his 11 pass attempts for 36 yards. Minnesota's veteran backup was 17-of-21 for 140 yards and a 13-yard touchdown to Kyle Rudolph.

The Chicago Bears haven't gotten much in the way of competent quarterback play this season. Before he reached the line of scrimmage he handed it off to tight end Zach Miller going the opposite way.

The interception spoiled Mitchell Trubisky's - he completed 12 of 25 for 128 yards.

The Bears started rookie quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, the No. 2 pick in April's draft, for the first time.

I'll grade him a bit more extensively later, but for now, I think the eye test will serve fine for this play.

The Bears need a whole lot of help around Trubisky, and that's not a news flash. Trubisky rolled right for the umpteenth time in the game and Smith, Minnesota's Pro Bowl safety, bated the rookie and snatched it deep in Bears' territory setting up Kai Forbath's 26-yard game victor. But it was fun, too: a fake-punt touchdown pass from Pat O'Donnell (first National Football League throw) to Benny Cunningham (first Bears touchdown); that tipped-ball touchdown to Miller, a play Trubisky extended with his legs; and a Jordan Howard-to-Miller-to-Trubisky two-point razzle dazzler. McKinnon had a 58-yard TD run around the right side in the third quarter for a 17-9 lead.

Heck, even Robert Griffin III knew the Vikings had to pull him, "for his own safety".

Zimmer said he thought about pulling Bradford earlier but the quarterback felt "pretty good about things".

Trubisky certainly showed that he belongs on the big stage, maintaining poise and showing off his raw play-making ability all night. You just take it, especially when you make a play like that. Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said Bradford re-aggravated his knee injury on one of the hits he took from the Chicago defense.

Chicago moves to 1-4 with the loss.

It's important to get rid of the ball quickly when you're backed up. Then Trubisky ran in the two-point conversion on a double-handoff that ended with Miller tossing to Trubisky on the outside for a score to make it 17-17.

Keenum outpassed Bradford in the first drive of the second half, throwing for 68 of the Vikings' 75 yards on the series. "Know the situation, it's first down, throw that ball away and go play".

But in the end, it was the mistake of his predecessors that cost him a win in his opening game. In one particularly inept first-half sequence, they called a timeout, then sent out the punt team, then rushed the offense back on the field for a fourth-down gamble, then were penalized for delay of game when they didn't get the snap off in time. We were supposed to see Bradford hand it off to Dalvin Cook and because we aren't, I'm just angry at the universe and the only thing I can do is write about it.
