Petty and his most popular and well-known collaborators-the Heartbreakers-just finished a 40th anniversary tour. "Like all great bands from the 60s and 70s, the Heartbreakers had a sound". Born October 20, 1950, in Gainesville, Florida, Petty became interested in the genre when he met Elvis Presley at age ten; he said he knew he wanted to form a band when he saw the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964.
Now, many of us are left to freefall into sadness; Petty is gone at 66 after suffering from cardiac arrest.

I can't begin to count the number of times that I've been on a long drive and Tom Petty would be blaring on my cd player, me singing along in the auto as the miles melted away. But since I've been alive, the world has lost so many talented artists. A great songwriter and performer, whenever we saw each other... But he defied history.
That made it seem like the ideal time to compile a playlist of what we feel were his 10 best songs. And he kept them coming.
Just take a look through Petty's extensive catalog - "Last Dance With Mary Jane", "Free Fallin'" and "Runnin' Down A Dream". And not just hits.
Petty broke out as front man for his band The Heartbreakers and hit his stride in the mid and late 70s with hits like "Breakdown", "Don't Do Me Like That" and "Refugee". And for good reason.
"My heart sank, because I grew up listening to his music and one of my favorite songs was American Girl", said Sanchez.
Rosenblum explains some of Jerusalem's geography and says some rabbis believe "the whole process of music" began in Israel. And millions of people - it takes one note for them to know exactly what they're going to hear. I would never let them notice me rocking out, but I would headbang to that guitar solo every time. Unfortunately there was only one. May we all "stand our ground" and "not back down".
