Goyal also instructed his officials to make multidisciplinary teams and conduct the inspections of suburban railway stations in Mumbai and identify all areas of concern within a week's time.

Top officials of the Western Railway, Government Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) have rushed to the spot to carry out investigations and rescue and relief work.

Goyal also announced a raft of other measures. "Piyush Goyal is in Mumbai taking stock of the situation and ensuring all assistance".

Out of the 100 new train services, 32 new services are meant for Western Railway while 68 services for Central Railway.

Mumbai (Maharashtra), Sept. 29: Former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan on Friday urged the Centre to complete all pending projects to avoid untoward incidents like stampede at Mumbai's Elphinstone railway station. Following the attack, workers at the hospital's mortuary have threatened to stop work.

"I was there when it started. the surging crowds suddenly halted on the bridge which seemed to shake". Because of the rain, a few people slipped and it led to a heart wrenching tragedy.

"There were rumours about a short circuit, the Elphinstone end of the bridge collapsing and some staircases breaking", he added.

Last year, Shiv Sena MP Arvind Sawant even wrote to Mr Prabhu calling for repairs on the bridge.

Tragedy has occurred during morning rush-hour at a major railway station in Mumbai.

Nirupam also shared that he along with his team will begin visiting all railway stations and conduct a detailed survey of such FOBs that were narrow and overcrowded, since they were sitting ducks for similar stampedes.

Cartoonist Manjul had tweeted to the railways on February 1 this year about the crowds at Parel station, which connects with the Elphinstone bridge. There were many demands for more bridges or at least a bigger and wider one but no one at the administrative level took notice. This too is being speeded up. "They (Railway) say it happened due to rains?"
