CRAWFORD | Four verticals: Malik Williams breaks out in Louisville's win at UNC

Posted September 11, 2017

It was the biggest offensive output against UNC by a single player in the Tar Heels' program history.

He wasn't ideal, particularly on a fumble that cost the Tar Heels 24 rushing yards, but seemed to pick up from last week.

MADISON, Wis. - Jonathan Taylor rushed for three touchdowns and 223 yards in his first career start as the Badgers cruised to a win. Yes, Smith was open, and Jackson just had to hit him, but this throw was just. Dazz Newsome's 54-yard catch-and-run was the first play from scrimmage and a step in the right direction, but the team finished one chunk play short of Fedora's challenge. North Carolina could also stand to tighten some things up on the defensive end after allowing California to roll up 469 total yards and pass for four touchdowns. "We have to do a much better job on that back end".

POCKET CONTAINMENT: UNC coach Larry Fedora said Jackson "can make you look foolish" with his ability to make big plays through the air or on the ground. It wasn't that easy with Williams out there. Chazz Surratt completed 18 of 28 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown while Brandon Harris added 60 yards with two interceptions in 7-for-16 passes. Jordan Cunningham contributed 39 yard in four receptions. They caught three of those passes for 42 yards.

No player had ever racked up more than 500 yards individually against the Tar Heels, but the junior quarterback showed fans in attendance just how special he truly is on the way to handing UNC (0-2, 0-1 ACC) its second consecutive loss to begin the season. Their next drive, 85 yards, ended with a field goal.

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound Jackson, in fact, looked like a longer, leaner version of the 6-foot, 210-pound Vick on a third-quarter 43-yard dash for a touchdown in which he exploded through the line of scrimmage and simply outran defensive backs' pursuit angles once into the open field. On the downside, he also lost a fumble. Kenny Hill served up an interception in TCU territory with the game knotted at 7-7, but Arkansas's ensuing drive stalled at the goal line and Cole Hedlund could not convert a 23-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter.

It was a rough day for Louisville's cornerbacks, who played without the injured Jaire Alexander.

Chason Virgil completed 21 of 34 passes for 180 yards for Fresno State (1-1).

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Trace McSorley threw for three touchdowns, including Saquon Barkley's 46-yard catch-and-run, and Penn State pulled away. For an offense that has concerns at quarterback, this definitely raises some troubling questions.

Louisville, beginning play in the ACC in 2014, conquered Miami 31-13 in Papa John's Cardinal Stadium to start the entire year in head coach Bobby Petrino's return to campus. Petrino praised Cannon's versatility in his post-game comments. That usually means the Cardinals are going to score points, given they solve their turnover problem.

Blanton Creque is 5 for 5 so far this season, including 2 of 2 at UNC, so he gets a pass. But the kickoff coverage was dismal. "So if he's able to beat us with his arm then — well, he's not going to beat us at all, I take that back".
