Twins Sweep Cleveland, Regain 1st Place

Posted June 26, 2017

After losing control of first place in a four-game sweep last weekend, Minnesota dealt the Tribe a three-game sweep of their own with a 4-0 victory to regain a half-game cushion atop the AL Central division on Sunday afternoon at Progressive Field. Springer hit his 22nd home run, a 456-foot blast to straightaway center field, and Gurriel hit his eighth homer, a two-run shot into the upper deck in left field that was estimated at 420 feet.

Liriano (4-3) picked up first victory since June 2 and only his second since April 29 as he stymied the Royals on six hits and two runs.

"I think there are times when you pause and you enjoy that things that come your way throughout a season", Molitor said. "He just missed it".

"It was the most high energy game we've had in a very long time, given the circumstances", Dozier said.

"There's a good team in Texas coming in", Tomlin said of the Rangers, who have played better since a poor start to the season. "So we wanted to stick it to them here". "We got to wait until tomorrow to see how he's doing".

It's pretty insane how big of a home/road split Rosario has this season, but I think it's just a fun stat rather than something you can actually draw any concrete conclusions from.

In this series, Twins starters combined to give up just one run over 15.2 innings.

This column presents 5 thoughts from Sunday's 4-0 win against the Indians.

Gibson pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up one run on four hits, with one strikeout and four walks.

Right-hander Rafael Montero limited the Giants to one run in 5 2/3 innings for his second career win, helping the Mets record their second road sweep of the season and first in San Francisco since 2013. Castro doubled over the head of left fielder Austin Jackson near the wall. Edwin Encarnacion may be getting all of the attention for his fantastic play over the last month, however, Cleveland's offense has gotten a major spark from a less-likely candidate in Jose Ramirez; Ramirez was named AL Player of the Week and had an unbelievable seven-game stretch in which he posted a.508 batting average with ten doubles, three home runs and seven RBI's.

BRAVES 3, BREWERS 1: Brandon Phillips gave Atlanta the lead with a two-run homer in the third to continue his productive homestand, R.A. Dickey threw seven strong innings and the surging Braves beat the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Twins have just had Cleveland's number this weekend. He struck out a season-high 10 in beating Baltimore in his last start. Joe Mauer walked and Robbie Grossman's double scored Dozier.

Bellinger's 24th home run (his second of the game) marked the most by an National League rookie since the first All-Star Game was played in 1933.

Kluber downplayed his strikeout total and blamed himself for Minnesota's early runs. Kipnis' throw to first garnered a throwing error in the scorebook, though it looked as if first baseman Carlos Santana came off the first base bag and swiped at Dozier unnecessarily. "If that's the case I guess we're still playing".

"We were undisciplined", Francona said. "Throw strikes, first-pitch strikes".

Meanwhile, left fielder Eddie Rosario was scratched from the original starting lineup with a similar illness that seems to be worsening. "Obviously we had to juggle the lineup a few times before the game even began, but we fought". The Indians have won all seven games at Target Field, but fell to 15-19 at home.

The Indians (39-34) managed to erase some early self-inflicted wounds but couldn't stave off a late charge by the Twins, who went to work against the bullpen.
