This gassy Neapolitan Mastiff named Martha

Martha, the sleepy victor of the 2017 World's Ugliest Dog Contest, getting some help to show a "bright smile" during the judging on stage in Petaluma, California, last Friday.

The Northern California crowd were charmed by Martha as she lay with her exhausted face spread across the stage.

The criteria the dogs are judged on include audience reaction, first impressions and unusual attributes. The event was held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair, and, as in years past, included dogs rescued from puppy mills and animal shelters.

Martha underwent surgery to improve her eyesight, and now, she's the top dog with $1,500 and a huge trophy to her name!

Along with the honor of the title, Martha gets $1,500, a trophy, and a trip to NY!

The annual event celebrates the unique features that make some dogs "so ugly that they're actually cute". In 2009 the Sonoma-Marin Fair trademarked the phrase World's Ugliest Dog.

The third was a 14-year-oldChinese Crested dog from the distant Britain, named Chase.

"If you have a dog that is more handsome on the inside than the outside, then this "beauty" contest is for you, " read the contest's poster. Now that Martha's the victor. expect to see her on all the morning talk shows.

And the World's Ugliest Dog of 2015 is.Martha, a Neapolitan Mastiff.

Vicky Adler from California called her Zoomer, an 8-year-old Chinese Crested dog, "a sexy boy".

The vast majority of the entries are rescue dogs and pooches that, without their sympathetic owners, may never had the shot to take home the coveted title.

Besides the main crown, the Spirit Award is presented to a dog and owner who have overcome obstacles or provide service to their community, organizers said.
