Kevin Harvick completes weekend sweep at Sonoma

Posted June 26, 2017

Sunday's victory was Harvick's first cup series win this year and his first in 17 races at Sonoma.

Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver Kevin Harvick (4) celebrates in victory lane during the Toyota - Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.

In winning for the 36th time in 590 career starts, Harvick took the checkered flag under caution after Kasey Kahne's Chevrolet clobbered the concrete Jersey barriers near the start/finish line.

For Harvick, it was the first victory since Stewart-Haas Racing switched to Ford this season. "I felt like the 78 was the vehicle we had to race and then he had problems and from there we were in control".

Clint Bowyer, a former Sonoma victor, wound up on the short end of the first round of qualifying, missing the 12-driver cut to advance to the last of two rounds of qualifying by.002 seconds.

"Hell, I was out of tires when I got done tearing the hell out of my auto", he said afterward. The road courses are always some of the most interesting because of the strategy and because of the aggressive racing once only reserved for the short tracks. Some of it was self-inflicted, some of it wasn't.

Keselowski got by Hamlin on the final lap to finish third for his first career top-five Sonoma finish. Also get the takes on road course specialists like Boris Said. Bowyer and Keselowski provided a challenge, but weren't able to stop Harvick from closing out the victory.

Larson is coming off his second win of the season at MI, and he finished a respectable 12 at Sonoma past year.

For Larson, this is his sixth Coors Light Pole Award of the 2017 season and his second in his last two races.

"This is worth the wait", he said. Are Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch worth the top prices they are commanding this week? I've had a lot of flat tires here and they just kill your race... Oh ya, and he is now in Tony Stewart's #14 vehicle which won the last race here.

"To finally check this one off the list. being so close to home and having raced here so much, this was one that was on the top of the list", Harvick said.

Larson had some tremendous restarts in MI this Sunday to capture his second win in a row dating back to last August. We shall see what the weekend brings and more than a few would like to see Earnhardt win.

Truex passed pole-sitter Larson for the lead on lap 10. We had fantastic race pace.

It's also possible Hamlin still has a rotten taste in his mouth from last year's Sonoma race, where he and now-retired driver Tony Stewart duked it out on an intense last lap.

The 1.99-mile road course was one of four tracks on the Cup circuit Harvick had not won at.

Matt Kenseth failed to post a qualifying time and will start last on Sunday, however, Kenseth was already starting in the back after he broke an oil pump in Friday practice session. By the time I got done tearing the hell out of my auto, I was out of tires.

Kahne had harsh words for Kevin O'Connell, who was making his Cup debut.

Alon Day became the first Israeli to start a race at NASCAR's highest level.

Stewart-Haas' co-owner Tony Stewart, who as a driver previous year celebrated a thrilling victory by overtaking Denny Hamlin on the final lap, said this team victory is even more satisfying.
