Green Germany expect tough Confed Cup start

His hat-trick against San Marino in Germany's last game before they head to Russian Federation signaled his intent.

Germany's Julian Brandt, right, and Australia's Bailey Wright go for a header during the Confederations Cup.

Only three of the squad - Arsenal's Shkodran Mustafi, Matthias Ginter and Julian Draxler - lifted the World Cup in Brazil three years ago, but none of the trio played in the Rio de Janeiro final.

On the back of his breakthrough season with RB Leipzig, striker Timo Werner, 21, expects a fiery start in Sochi for the untested, green Germans.

They also knew that their best hope of scoring a win would come in the match between them, a game that will take place in Saint Petersburg on Thursday, with both sides having lost their opening encounters of the tournament.

Germany vs Australia will be played at 4 pm WET as the last game of the first round for the group stages of the Confederations Cup.

"The five minutes just before half-time once we got back into it and then again just after [half-time]".

A year out from the World Cup in Russian Federation, there has never been a better time for the Socceroos to poach a first win over Germany at a major competition at the fourth attempt.

"So in the second half, Australia had a bit more possession but I didn't think they had a lot of opportunities and chances".

Germany immediately went in search of a third goal after the break and got what they were after in the 48th minute when Goretzka beat Mathew Ryan with a powerful volley after a brilliant pass from Joshua Kimmich.

"They know they have to produce". In the second half we pressed Germany a lot higher up and forced them long a lot of the time.

Also in Group B are Chile and Cameroon, with the eight-team competition made up of all six regional championship winners, as well as the World Cup holders and upcoming hosts.

"It will help us reach our goals next year or afterwards and it helps to make our players better".

With the likes of key midfielders Mesut Ozil and Toni Kroos rested, the pressure falls on 23-year-old captain Draxler.

The Socceroos shocked a below-strength German side 2-1 in Moenchengladbach in 2011.

The Socceroos qualified for the World Cup warm-up tournament by winning the Asian Cup in 2015 to be crowned Asian champions.

However, the Socceroos have arrived in Russian Federation on the back of a narrow World Cup qualifying win over Saudi Arabia and a hammering by Brazil.

Tom Rogic believes nerves may have contributed to the Caltex Socceroos' first-up 3-2 loss to Germany at the Confederations Cup.

"Let's dispell one myth - when the teams walk out tomorrow, if I had to guess, I reckon we'd be younger", he said.

In the opening Group B clash, Chile's Arturo Vidal and Eduardo Vargas struck late goals to secure a deserved 2-0 win over Cameroon.
