Impressing the judges with what appeared to be her "300 pounds" of droopy skin on her long bones, she won the crown along with a trophy, a trip to NY and $1500 (USD).
No doubt about it. Martha is ugly. And when Martha's owner tried to sell her on Craigslist, Shirley Zindler, the founder of the Dogwood Animal Rescue Project, an animal fostering group, came to the mastiff's aid.
She also received a trophy, and a flight to New York City for "media appearances", according to contest organizers.
In winning, Martha also earned another - one might say greater - honor: her place enshrined on an illustrious list of champions that dates back almost three decades.
Martha beat out 13 other dogs, majority neglected dog breeds, to get the crown.
Although numerous compliments Martha received were somewhat backhanded - an AP article described her as "gassy", and a New York Times story said she had uncontrollable drool - she warmed the hearts of the audience and the judges when she sauntered onto the stage and immediately plopped on her side, her loose skin too stretchy to not love. "We tell her every day". Like, last year, a blind Chihuahua-Chinese Crested mix named Sweepee Rambo took home the title. "Notable past winners include Walle, a basset/boxer mix that waddled as he walked; Peanut, a tiny dog with a history of abuse; and Quasi Modo a short-spined mutt that was an audience favorite", the contest's website reads.
Like victor Martha, many dogs were adopted.
A mixed breed dog named Icky looks on during the 2017 World's Ugliest Dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, on June 23, 2017.
Foster dog Martha claimed the coveted title.
