- House Majority Whip Steve Scalise is improving after being shot in Alexandria and is now listed in fair condition, MedStar Washington Hospital Center announced.

The message from congressman Steve Scalise of Louisiana on Sunday says: "Steve's greatest joy is being a father to Madison and Harrison, and a husband to Jennifer". When he first arrived at the hospital following the shooting in Virginia, Scalise was said to be at "imminent risk of death".

Barth was hospitalized and released, Williams said. "The round fragmented, and caused significant damage to bones, internal organs and blood vessels".

Scalise and other congressional Republicans were practicing for their annual charity baseball game against Democrats when a gunman started shooting.

The rifle-wielding attacker - James T. Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Ill. - died after being wounded by Capitol Police.

Sava said that Scalise's doctors "fully expect him to walk.and hopefully run" in the future.

Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".

Scalise, R-La., has made incremental progress since being shot in the left hip last Wednesday; his condition was previously upgraded from "critical" to "serious" on Saturday.
