CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER: The great Muslim civil war, and us

The "sudden massive missile strike" was directed at "command posts and large ammunition depots of IS terrorists in the vicinity of Akerbat settlement in the province of Hama", it said in a statement.

Russian Federation is the most powerful ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime, and the rare air-to-air encounter prompted Moscow to suspend a de-confliction hotline with the US-led coalition, created to prevent any accidents in the skies over Syria.

Iran's strikes against Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) targets in Syria's Deir ez-Zor governorate on June 18 marked the Islamic Republic's first missile strikes in a foreign country since Tehran attacked the People's Mujahedin of Iran (MEK), a militant political organization, in Diyala, Iraq, with ballistic missiles in 2001.

In late May, the Russian navy launched four Kalibr cruise missiles against Daesh in the historic city of Palmyra.

Dillon would not say if Russian Federation had used the line to warn the Americans ahead of the strike, but a USA defense official confirmed to AFP that it had.

Back in August of previous year, the Russian Black Sea Fleet also fired Kalibr cruise missiles over unpopulated areas to destroy a command post and munitions production site of another terrorist group operating in Syria, the Al-Nusra Front, the Russian military said.

The strike was launched after a large Islamic State convoy, comprising 39 vehicles and 120 militants, was spotted outside the city of Raqqa, a Defense Ministry source told RIA Novosti at the time. His last public appearance was nearly three years ago in the Iraqi city of Mosul, at the 12th century al-Nuri Mosque from where he declared a "caliphate" in the territory that ISIS had seized in Iraq and Syria in July 2014. Two other times this month the USA has shot down Iranian-made drones in southern Syria that were deemed to pose a threat to US and partner forces.

Russian warships fired missiles into Syria on Friday, according to reports. Ankara is angered by a US decision to launch the Raqqa offensive in partnership with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.

In the meantime, Syrian Kurdish leader and co-head of the PYD, Salih Muslim, has said that Iran is opposing the rights of Kurds in Syria. However, the fighter jet continued to bomb the forces incessantly and thus compelled the U.S. aircraft to take down the Syrian Jet.

The Syrian government will not allow its enemies to benefit from the creation of de-escalation zones in western Syria, the Syrian deputy foreign minister has said, ahead of worldwide talks on the zones scheduled for early July in Kazakhstan.
