Microsoft says Xbox One X's steep price tag won't turn a profit

Original Xbox backward compatibility with Xbox One was one of the major announcements that came from Phil Spencer at E3 2017.

"I look at [PS4] Pro as more of a competitor to [Xbox One] S than I do to Xbox One X. This is a true 4K console", Spencer told Eurogamer. With a 2.1 GHz 8-core AMD chip, the Sony console is slightly behind the 2.3 GHz 8-core AMD CPU that Microsoft's newest console uses. Microsoft's new console also comes with 12 GB of RAM, compared to only 8 GB for Sony's premium device.

"Xbox empowers game developers large and small to create different types of games for every type of player", said Phil Spencer, head of Xbox.

"I want people to be able to play games", he explained.

The new Xbox can play the same games as the Xbox One but with better graphics - something the rival PlayStation 4 can do. The system will be capable of 4K/HDR gaming with Dolby Atmos Support as will feature a 4K Blu-Ray Drive.

When Ben Gilbert asked Spencer whether Microsoft is making any money on each unit of the Xbox One X, to which he simply replied: "No".

On the one hand, you had Microsoft needing to push a brand-new piece of expensive hardware, a task that is always much easier said than done.

This new system is still, fundamentally, an Xbox One in that it can play all the same games and should have numerous same features, but Microsoft designed it to render 4K games and other visually impressive capabilities.

The X has 22 "console launch exclusives" including Crackdown3, Forza Motorsport 7, and Sea of Thieves.

The show first gave a huge overview of the console itself, as well as confirming its official release date, and Microsoft eventually confirmed the Xbox One X price of $499. However he also noted that due to PCs having varied specs, it makes it slightly more complicated than a console whose specs are fixed. The impressive video game console is considered as the most powerful one in the world for a reason, and it takes top-of-the-line components for it to make such a claim.
