76ers get No. 1 pick from Celtics, chance to draft Fultz

But if either of those picks become the first overall, the Celtics will receive the other pick.

The thinking behind the trade, largely, is that the player the Sixers mosts covets in this year's draft - point guard Markelle Fultz, would not be available by pick 3, whereas the players the Celtics are circling - forward Josh Jackson and forward Jayson Tatum - nearly certainly will still be available at pick 3.

Adding Hayward could potentially be the start of something special for the Celtics.

Ainge added, "We'll get a player we like in addition to further assets".

"I think they're both terrific players", Ainge said. He would not reveal the targeted player, but the worst-kept secret is that the Sixers will use the pick on Washington point guard Markelle Fultz.

It will mark the second straight year that Philadelphia selects first overall. By doing this, the Celtics have passed on a superior talent in Markelle Fultz which has left many fans wondering what GM Danny Ainge has in store for the team's future.

"I felt like it was the right time to move and apply some of those assets to a transaction that would allow this type of thing to happen", Colangelo said during a 34-minute news conference at the team's training facility.

The Celtics are expected to be very much a part of the conversation of moving George, but they might be hampered by his infatuation with the Los Angeles Lakers. "With the certainty of No. 1, we know we control our circumstances". "They're getting the player they want", Ainge said, referring to the 76ers.

Once Boston landed the No. 1 pick in the May 16 draft lottery, Colangelo said he expressed his interest in the top selection to Zarren.

This would then worsen the chance that the Lakers get a top five pick in next year's draft. Boston's additional compensation, the future first-rounder, necessitated more of an explanation. Otherwise, the Celtics will have a choice of first-rounders in 2019 - either from Sacramento or Philadelphia, whichever pick is higher.

Fultz averaged 23.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists in 25 games during his lone college season at Washington, excelling on a team that finished 9-22.

For now, Boston has seven first-round selections in the next three years. He was the top freshman scorer in the country. Pairing Fultz with Philly's young core of stars such as Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, and Dario Saric has many folks calling the Sixers the team to beat in the near future.

"History suggests that No. 1 has the greatest odds of producing franchise-level talent, and we are confident that this year's draft class has that very potential", Colangelo said.
