The gunman, identified by authorities as James T. Hodgkinson III of IL, died after a shootout with police.

Scalise is the third-most powerful member of the House and always travels with Capitol Police as his security detail. Trump announced during a press conference on Wednesday morning that he died from his injuries.

"My thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and all the other victims, including the Capitol police, who are true and courageous professionals who put their lives on the line every day".

Scalise, the House majority whip, was shot in the hip and underwent surgery at a hospital, which reported this afternoon that he was in critical condition.

It happened during a Republican practice for the Annual Congressional Baseball Game held for charity.

President Trump also condemned the shooting and issued a call for unity.

First responders airlifted both Scalise and Griner in a U.S. Park Police Eagle helicopter, capable of carrying two patients, to the hospital for treatment. "Violence of any kind is unacceptable in our society", the former Democratic presidential nominee said.

Hodgkinson also shot Matt Mika, who works as a lobbyist for Tyson Foods and was helping to coach the team; Zachary Barth, a legislative correspondent who works for Texas Rep. Roger Williams; and two U.S. Capitol Police Officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner.

According to a statement from the hospital, Scalise remains in critical condition after suffering injuries to his internal organs and severe bleeding.

"Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police Officers who took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault".

Mr Scalise is the third-highest-ranked member of the Republican leadership in the House, and has the hard job of trying to keep order in the fractious party ranks and rounding up votes for Bills. She is expected to make a full recovery after she was shot in the ankle. "I am thankful that the shooter was apprehended by law enforcement quickly, and his deadly intentions were not fully realized", Patrick said.

"Baseball is one of his great passions and he has always loved the Congressional team", his family said.
