Police say Cornell had band around neck

According to TMZ, the grunge rock icon was found with a band around his neck, and there was no blood at the scene, which has police suspecting his death was a suicide. A full autopsy has not been completed yet. "There is no additional information at this time".

Cornell said he offered minimal explanation for his songs because he wanted fans to come up with their own meanings.

The tweet was his last.

Vicky reportedly claimed that the singer was not depressed or in a suicidal state before his tragic death. She doubled down and said there were no signs he was at all depressed.

Cornell, 52, was in Detroit performing with Soundgarden, which had embarked on a US tour in April, CNN reports.

"Chris Cornell he's like 12 years younger than me, he's my friend and we'd go out together for dinner".

As The Detroit Free Press reported earlier, local authorities received a 911 call from a hotel just after midnight from a family friend of Cornell, who was apparently conducting a well-being check on the singer (not a good sign, really).

The statement also read Cornell's wife and family are in a shock and they have asked for privacy.

The musician, who was also a skilled songwriter, had tweeted a picture of the music venue shortly before the sold-out show, writing: "Finally back to Rock City!".

Soundgarden was one of the leading bands in the grunge music movement in the 1980s and '90s, releasing albums such as Badmotorfinger and the Grammy-winning Superunknown, which brought the band mainstream music scene success.

Three years later, Soundgarden broke through on mainstream radio with the album Superunknown, which reached number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States and was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Record in 1995. He joined the supergroup Audioslave, whose lineup included members of Rage Against the Machine, in 2001.

The group's defining moment was a 2005 concert in Cuba, which at the time was billed as the country's first outdoor rock concert by an American band.

He reunited with Soundgarden in 2010 and they released a sixth studio album, King Animal, two years later.
