A police spokesman told two Detroit newspapers that the singer was found with a band around his neck.

She said Cornell flew home to spend Mother's Day with the family over the weekend between gigs and then flew back out midday Wednesday, the afternoon of the Detroit show, after spending time with his children.

"We are devastated to hear about the sudden passing of Chris Cornell last night", they said.

Kirk Pasich, an attorney for the Chris Cornell family, said that the family is disturbed at inferences that Chris knowingly and intentionally took his life.

Soundgarden's support band The Dillinger Escape Plan spoke about how Chris had been on the rest of the tour.

It has now been reported by medical officials that the star hanged himself inside his hotel room at the MGM Grand Hotel in Detroit, Michigan.

He received a Golden Globe nomination for the theme song to James Bond film Casino Royale in 2006, which he wrote and performed.

"To create the intimacy of an acoustic performance there needed to be real stories".

When asked about his favourite musicians during an interview with Cinema Central in 2004, Brad said: "I'm a big Chris Cornell addict, anything he does". "There was about two years where I was more or less agoraphobic and didn't deal with anybody, didn't talk to anybody, didn't have any friends at all".

'I never thought in my whole life we'd come away with platinum records and people would consider us this obscure band that no one really knew about, it was amusing'.

Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains and Mudhoney were among the most high-profile bands to come out of Seattle and dominated the pop culture landscape of the early and mid-1990s. However, fans in his hometown of Seattle are taking it especially hard.

His songs such as "Fell on Black Days" and "The Day I Tried to Live" appeared to touch on his darkness, but Cornell would play down deeper meanings that listeners heard in his lyrics. "It was like a Detroit, only northwest kind of. So I think he'll go down in history as one of the greats". He and bassist Kim Thayil, a University of Washington graduate, and Western Washington University alum Hiro Yamamoto were roommates when they formed Soundgarden. In 2001, Cornell joined the band Audioslave.

Led Zeppelin rocker Jimmy Page has also paid tribute to Chris, describing him as an "incredibly talented" artist. But it seemed like the tensions with the former bandmates had disappeared and Cornell rejoined Soundgarden in 2012 and even released the album "King Animal".

Cornell also had an extensive solo career as a singer, guitarist, composer and lyricist and worked with various other musicians over three decades in the music business.

With that in mind, here are the five best songs Chris Cornell ever sang.
