"In the years I worked with Ailes he was a great mentor, deeply patriotic, committed to Fox News and really anxious about America", Gingrich tweeted Thursday afternoon.

Ailes died at 77, his wife said in a statement Thursday morning.

"Roger was my best friend, the most wonderful loving husband and father to our son Zachary, he was a loyal friend to so many. Roger was a patriot, grateful to live in a country that gave him so much opportunity to work hard, to rise - and to give back".

He saw something in me and many others he hired that we never saw in ourselves, and forever changed the trajectory of thousands of peoples lives.

But Ailes, whose perch at the top of Fox News ended suddenly last summer following sexual harassment allegations, also leaves behind several pending lawsuits alleging harassment or race or gender discrimination involving two dozen current or former employees.

Ailes has often been embroiled in sexual harassment claims.

The Left would command a monopoly control of the so-called "news" media but for the Fox News Channel, and FNC would not exist but for him.

Fox is owned by Mr Murdoch's Twenty-First Century Fox Inc. "Roger shared my vision of a great and independent television organization and executed it brilliantly over 20 great years".

The former aide to President Nixon started Fox News in 1996.

Fox News anchor Sean Hannity tweeted a multi-part tribute to the man he credits with making him who he is today, calling him a "true American original" and "one of [America's] great patriotic warriors".

Ailes, an OH native, began his television career in the early 1960s as a producer at The Mike Douglas Show in Cleveland, and went onto serve as media consultant for several Republican presidents, including Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

Ailes acted as a consultant to Bush during his 1988 presidential bid, as well as helping former Presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan.

Ailes was forced out of FOX News after allegations of sexual harassment surfaced. In an independent investigation, Kelly told investigators that Ailes sexually harassed her in the past.

Geraldo Rivera, Brit Hume, and Laura Ingraham were among the the journalists who praised Ailes in tweets.

"Avowedly partisan and ideological news has made it possible for a lot of Americans to opt out of the common discourse and the common fund of information about politics that governed a political life for so long", said Greenberg.

Shortly after his resignation, he reportedly returned to politics.

His death was announced in a statement by his wife, Elizabeth Ailes, according to Fox News.

Details are emerging about an accident Roger Ailes suffered in Florida a few days before died.
