Tanya Davis, Canadian Cancer Society mid-Island annual giving coordinator, said 2017 is the previous year for the event because of waning support.
On Saturday, May 20th at 3 p.m. through Sunday, May 21st at 7 a.m.at Harbor Island Park in Mamaroneck Relay for Life will be " Dreaming of a Cure" by walking/running for a world with less cancer. Our guy, Principal Chisum, is one scrappy competitor.
Despite rainy conditions heading into the weekend, Relay For Life events went on as planned in Lebanon and Cumberland counties.
Volunteers will join cancer survivors, caregivers, and community members at a cancer support event Saturday to raise money for treatment.
The Relay starts at 4 p.m. with a Survivor reception at Goforth Hall, entertainment, light refreshments and distribution of survivor shirts. As the survivors walk, other participants will cheer them on in a demonstration of support and celebration.
Shown at top, captains from 23 relay teams take a moment to be recognized.
"The relay may just get lost in the shuffle now because people have just sort of been there and done that, so we're hoping if we come with a new event that's not a walk or a run, that will get Nanaimo excited about supporting us again", she said.
The Relay for Life is an event that is held throughout various communities across the United States. The team fundraising event lasts from 11 a.m. -11 p.m., and each team is asked to have a member on the path at all times to symbolize the ongoing fight against cancer.
