One person is dead and 12 others were injured in a auto crash in Times Square in New York City today, fire officials said.

Thursday's mayhem began at noon on a hot, clear day that brought large crowds of people into the streets to enjoy the good weather. Lowe says the driver then got out of his vehicle and started running until people tackled him. The driver was taken into custody and being tested for alcohol. Details were not immediately available.

"Preliminarily it looks more like a vehicle accident than anything else", a NY police spokesman told AFP.

In the Bronx, neighborhood acquaintances said Rojas was a friendly man who had been having problems.

Police said one person was killed in the incident.

Police said Rojas made a quick U-turn onto 42nd Street and then drove up the sidewalk for three blocks, passing tourist draws like the Hard Rock Cafe and the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company restaurant and mowing people down before slamming into a pole.

He said there is no indication the accident was an act of terror.

Planet Hollywood said Bradix "selflessly and heroically took action, helping to stop the fleeing suspect".

Rojas was in custody and unable to comment.

This was one of several interactions that Comey believed jeopardized the FBI's independence, the Times reports, and he instructed the president on the proper way to receive details about investigations: have the White House counsel send inquiries to the Department of Justice.

The driver ran up on the sidewalk and continued fro 3 blocks until he hit a metal stanchion.

"I'm the area all the time", she said.

That network of barricades, though, is far from a complete defense.

More than 300,000 people, many of them tourists, pass through Times Square every day, according to its official website.
