Ronaldo 'never expected' to reach historic century of European goals

Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score 100 goals in UEFA competitions when he struck twice as holder Real Madrid came from behind to win 2-1 at Bayern Munich in the first-leg of its Champions League quarterfinal on Wednesday. This was a huge test for Real Madrid because they were playing in Germany in which Bayern Munich has an incredible record. We scored, Bayern played with one less and it would've been easier with one more.

The Sporting game is followed by a huge week that will see Madrid play the second leg of their tie with Bayern before hosting Barcelona in El Clasico.

Despite Rummenigge's optimism, Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti was more cautious, hoping both Lewandowski and defender Mats Hummels, who missed the home defeat with an ankle injury, will be fit for the return.

"We believe we can still do it, we were the better team in the first half, could have made it 2-0 or 3-0", Neuer told ZDF. The Poland global was clearly missed by the Bundesliga champions during their 2-1 defeat to Los Blancos on Wednesday night but club chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge promises "100%" he will be back for the return fixture.

Before scoring his first goal of the night, Ronaldo had gone 659 minutes without scoring in Europe, but he insisted he was unaware of any doubters. "But we leave with a sour taste because we could have scored more goals". That's because we were losing and it was tough to come back. It's an honour for me because it's a very hard number.

"Maybe Real Madrid could have killed the qualification if they scored another goal but they didn't score and we try our best on Tuesday".

Bayern should have been 2-0 up at the break in Wednesday's first-leg, but Arturo Vidal, who headed the hosts into a first-half lead, skied a penalty. Hopefully, it will be another great game and that Real Madrid can demonstrate they can win the Champions League and a League title in the same year.

Ousmane Dembele pulled one back for Dortmund in the 57th minute but another defensive mistake allowed Mbappe to break away and grab a third goal for the Ligue 1 side. "We are still alive, we have a chance", he said.
