Alex Cugno (KOOG'-no) grew up with the former New England Patriots tight end in Bristol, Connecticut. The New England Patriots won two Super Bowls while Hernandez sat in prison, one when he was awaiting trial for murdering a friend, the other while he was awaiting trial for killing two strangers.

Prosecutors claimed he gunned the two men down after one accidentally spilled a drink on him in a nightclub - and then got a tattoo of a handgun and the words "God Forgives" to commemorate the crime. Hernandez's appeal had not yet been heard by the state's high court.

Aaron Hernandez's apparent suicide has an inmate advocacy group calling for more mental health services in MA prisons.

Leslie Walker, executive director of Prisoners' Legal Services of MA, says the Department of Correction has taken some steps over the last decade to make it more hard for inmates to take their own lives.

He was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the Lloyd murder.

The family and legal team is shocked and surprised at the news of Aaron's death. Not only is Baez and his legal team investigating Aaron's death, but they're calling on authorities to look into it, too.

He says Hernandez was looking forward to an opportunity for a second chance to prove his innocence in the 2013 slaying of Odin Lloyd. He says Hernandez's loved ones are "heartbroken and determined to find the truth surrounding his untimely death".

Aaron Hernandez's death means his murder conviction is likely to disappear.

Hernandez's attorneys can move to have the conviction in the Lloyd case erased, said Martin Healy, chief legal counsel for the Massachusetts Bar Association.

Authorities say Hernandez was found hanging in his MA prison cell early Wednesday and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The child molestation conviction of former Roman Catholic priest John Geoghan, a key figure in the clergy sex abuse scandal that rocked the Boston archdiocese, was vacated after he was beaten to death in 2003 in his cell at the same MA maximum-security prison.

According to MA law, that conviction is automatically appealed to the state's highest court.

Some of them took to Twitter to post about Hernandez's death.

Hernandez was tight with 3-time NFL Pro Bowler Mike Pouncey - who now plays for the Miami Dolphins.

Authorities offered few answers after Hernandez was found hanging from a bedsheet Wednesday in his cell in a maximum-security prison in MA, where he was serving a life sentence for the 2013 slaying of a onetime friend.

Fallon said he was not aware of any suicide note and officials had no reason to believe Hernandez was suicidal. He started the 2010 season as the youngest active player in the National Football League and played three seasons before he was arrested for murder.

Last week, Hernandez was acquitted in the 2012 drive-by shootings of two men in Boston. Aaron Hernandez played in a Super Bowl on the world's biggest stage and died in an 8-by-10 cell, at the end of a bed sheet tied by the same hands that once commanded $40 million simply to catch footballs. Hernandez was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

"Especially after him getting acquitted of the double murder". Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bed sheet that he attached to his cell window.

In a statement, the Department of Corrections said Hernandez was discovered hanged in his cell by corrections officers around 3:05 a.m. local time.

He was later pronounced dead at UMass Leominster Hospital.
