Classes to resume a week after shooting at California school

Several hundred people attended the memorial service for teacher Karen Smith after her estranged husband Cedric Anderson entered North Park Elementary, killing Smith, eight-year-old student Jonathan Martinez and wounding nine-year-old student Nolan Brandy on April 10 in San Bernardino.

Authorities say Anderson was targeting his wife, Karen Elaine Smith, but also struck two of her students.

Leon and Rachel Brandy, parents of surviving North Park Elementary School shooting victim Nolan Brandy, wish to thank the community for the outpouring of prayers and support they have received.

They said Nolan is recovering very well, adding that they are "grateful". After they split, Anderson began acting odd and threatening her, but according to Smith's mother, Smith did not take any of the accusations seriously because she thought he was just trying to get attention.

According to NBC News, in addition to her four adult children, Smith left behind three grandchildren who are mourning the loss as well.

She said the uncertainty was frightening, and the knowledge that multiple people were shot was distressing.

North Park's classrooms will also be fitted with locks this summer.
