Moscow considers Boris Johnson's reason for cancelled visit absurd

Only terrorists will benefit from the USA strikes on the Syrian airbase, Lavrov told Tillerson.

Moscow considers absurd the reason for cancelling a visit to Russia of the UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova told TASS on April 8.

Russia, an ally of the Assad regime, said the strikes had "completely ruined" the relationship between Moscow and Washington.

"The process by which Assad would leave is something that requires an global community effort both to first defeat ISIS within Syria, to stabilize the Syrian country to avoid further civil war and then to work collectively with our partners around the world through a political process that would lead to Assad leaving", Tillerson said.

But Mr Johnson attacked the Kremlin and said he would instead focus on building support with allies to secure a ceasefire in war-torn Syria.

Mr Johnson spoke with U.S. secretary of state Rex Tillerson, who is still due to visit Russian Federation, before making his decision.

He added: "I will be working to arrange for other like-minded partners to meet and explore next steps soon too".

President Trump called the chemical attack "reprehensible" and blamed it on the Obama administration.

"I discussed these plans in detail with Secretary Tillerson". "We are asking Russian Federation to fulfill its commitment and we're asking and calling on Bashar al-Assad to cease the use of these weapons". "My priority" is to attend the G-7 talks to discuss "Syria and Russia's support for Assad", he said.

The US ambassador to the United Nations has said America is "prepared to do more" militarily in Syria but hopes it will not be necessary.

On Friday, the USA fired 59 Tomahawk missiles at Shayrat Airbase from destroyers in the Mediterranean Sea in response to Tuesday's Assad regime chemical attack in Idlib that left some 100 men, women, and children dead and more than 500 injured.
