Chinese state media cheer Xi-Trump meeting, say confrontation not inevitable

Ivanka Trump urged her two oldest kids Arabella and Joseph to serenade the Chinese President Xi Jinping in Mandarin during his visit to the Donald's Mar-a-Lago estate.

Trump accepted Xi's invitation to visit China, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

The strikes against Syria, which came in the middle of the state dinner Trump hosted for Xi at his Mar-a-Lago estate, could also send a message to China that the USA may take unilateral action unless Beijing helps rein in Pyongyang. "All parties should not give up efforts to use political ways to solve the crisis", Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told reporters here, deflecting questions over how China viewed United States strikes in Syria which overshadowed Xis first summit meeting with Trump in Florida. "But we have developed a friendship, I can see that and I think in the long term we're going to have a very, very great relationship and I look very much forward to it".

After the strikes, Trump addressed the nation and said that it is in the "vital national interest" of the prevent and deter the spread and use of deadly chemical weapons.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with his US counterpart Donald Trump here on Thursday.

Discussions between Trump and Xi over North Korea came days after Trump warned that the U.S. was prepared to act unilaterally to stop North Korea's nuclear program from advancing further should China be unwilling to use its leverage over Pyongyang.

China in the past has maintained contacts with both the Syrian government and rebels, and has teamed up with Russian Federation to veto any United Nations resolution proposals sponsored by the USA and its allies to sanction the Assad government since the countrys civil war broke out nearly six years ago. Of course, if the country collapses, there is a major refuge issue, and if Kim or his military are stupid enough to start a war, China will have to deal with the US military operating right in its backyard. Nevertheless, no major deal is expected to happen during the Trump-Xi meeting.

Wang Dong, Associate Professor of International Studies at China's elite Peking University, said the move may have had the added bonus in Trump's eyes of sending North Korea a message over its nuclear programme, but that China was unlikely to be fazed.

Both the leaders were wearing dark suits, with Trump donning a red tie, and Xi wearing a blue one.

Trump said in a brief appearance before reporters Friday that he and Xi made "tremendous progress" in their talks and that he believes "lots of very potentially bad problems will be going away".

The talks have been overshadowed by surprise USA military strikes against Syria the previous night. -China trade will also be beneficial to Taiwanese businesses based in China, Lee said, but he added that the US will continue its efforts to reduce China's exports to the USA and thus, Taiwan needs to take measures in response as soon as possible. It will see the country's top leadership ranks decided, and it's the first such meeting since 2012.

The Chinese president also underlined the role of four newly-established high-level mechanisms for dialogue and cooperation between China and the United States in such areas as diplomacy and security, economy, law enforcement and cyber security, as well as social and people-to-people exchanges.
