U.S. win eliminates Dominican Republic from Classic

Puerto Rico, which vowed to be aggressive, stole five bases off All-Star catcher Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants, including three by second baseman Javy Baez of the Chicago Cubs. Venezuela has been eliminated, leaving the United States and Dominican Republic to battle it out today to determine the fourth spot in the semis, which begin Monday.

Incredible. The stakes were high - Saturday's game was legitimately USA's biggest win in global competition since Ben Sheets shut out Cuba in the gold medal game at the 2000 Olympics - and Jones came through with a highlight reel catch. The Venezuelans enjoyed several inning of shutout ball from their starting pitcher, but failed to supply him with run support.

Earlier on Saturday, Puerto Rico completed a 3-0 run through Pool F by beating Venezuela 13-2. Before giving up two runs in the ninth, Puerto Rico's bullpen had pitched nine scoreless innings in this round. "We are hoping in God to finish the mission". Puerto Rico tries to sweep the pool.

You can catch the game on MLB Network, MLB.TV, or, if you're in San Diego, maybe head to Petco and watch it live, I don't know.

Kennys Vargas hit a two-run home run and Angel Pagan added a double and two singles as Puerto Rico got 17 hits.

"It's pretty simple", Team USA Manager Jim Leyland told reporters when asked for his thoughts on tonight's game after last night's loss to Puerto Rico.

Jones delighted in checking the replay before he spoke with reporters. Players don't want to get hurt for obvious reasons, teams don't want their players to get hurt for equally obvious reasons.

This is the second time in four editions of the WBC that the United States has advanced to the semifinals. But Reyes popped out, Machado hit a fly ball to very short center field that offered Polanco no opportunity to tag up, and Cano was out on a routine grounder to shortstop.

Puerto Rico: Like Venezuela and the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico has some exciting talent on the roster. Carlos Beltran singled in Lindor and Yadier Molina followed with a single to drive in Correa. They may lack the pitching to get back.

Stanton's home run was a career moment for baseball's most powerful slugger, who has had precious few team moments in his decorated career. The Dominicans were 12-1 in their last 13 WBC games, including a 7-5 victory over the USA a week ago in Miami. Lots of good Major League players, and thinking about a team with all these good players is exciting. Former Mariner Omar Vizquel (taking over for another former Mariner, Luis Sojo) is managing the team.
