The process of finalisation of the policy on the use of red beacons on government vehicles, barring those used in an emergency like ambulance or fire brigade, and those of the Chief Justice and the Judges of Punjab and Haryana High Court, has started.

The newly-elect Congress-led Punjab government has made a decision to put an end to the VIP culture of using red beacon atop vehicles by state ministers.

Amarinder and his council of ministers went with a populist move to remove red beacons from all official vehicles.

The former CM also said if the new government has the will to fulfill its promises, it can easily do so.

"The protocol of laying foundation stones and inaugurations by legislators and ministers would be clearly defined and laid down, ensuring respect for all citizens", the government spokesperson said. The state will also come up with a new transport policy. It will carry only one line saying that the project has been executed with the money of the taxpayers.

Former Punjab chief minister (CM) Parkash Singh Badal on Sunday declined the offer of a free government accommodation made by the Captain Amarinder Singh-led Congress government as a goodwill gesture. Addressing the media after the Cabinet meeting, Badal said, "The Bill will be more effective than was proposed by Anna Hazare".

Badal said he was surprised over the setting up of a committee by the new government to study the farmer's debt.

On the contentious SYL issue, the Cabinet decided that the government will take up the matter of sharing of water in the courts and at the administrative level on priority basis.
